People looking for reassurance that LASIK and PRK are safe may be comforted to know that NASA has now given its stamp of approval for these laser vision correction procedures.
NASA for the first time will consider applicants who have undergone LASIK and PRK eye surgery. Previously around half of all rejected NASA Astronaut candidates were ruled out because of poor vision due to the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Although LASIK was once considered a risk due to the extreme conditions possibly dislodging the flap, lengthy studies by, doctors have found that the flap is stable and is only at risk of being moved by direct manual pressure on the eye.

In a recent article for the US Navy Times it is reported that the US navy will do just that for its sailors and marines and pilots.
In the past LASIK was considered a high risk at the extremes of conditions that pilots are expected to work under such as high gravitational forces, low oxygen levels, high winds and dry air. Studies have now confirmed that the LASIK flap is stable under these extreme situations and can only be dislodged by direct manual pressure to the eye.

‘A fantastic service from start to finish. The initial consultation was very thorough with Dr Chitkara explaining everything and answering all of my questions. He put me very much at ease.

Viewpoint is delighted to report a very successful evening with our Opticians this evening. The seminar was very well attended despite the UEFA cup final supporters in town. We were able to discuss the various options now available for correcting of Presbyopia (age related loss of ability to read close up) and the new technologies on the horizon. All participants agreed that Lens surgery is the way ahead and all current options such as Aspheric lenses, multifocal lenses and accommodating lenses were discussed.

Viewpoint will be holding an open evening and Teaching seminar for opticians on Wednesday 14th May 2008. The teaching session carries 2.5 CET points

Implant Technologies designed to correct the age related loss of accommodation is the holy grail of Ophthalmology.
