Mr Deepak Chitkara – MBChB, DO, FRCOphth – Clinical Director

For over 20 years Mr Chitkara has established a reputation as one of the leading expert in Refractive or Corrective Eye surgery in UK and Internationally.

Graduate of Manchester University Medical School in 1983 – MBChB with Honours in Physiology and Biochemistry

Trained as an Eye surgeon in Manchester and North East England passing his specialist post-graduate exams and became a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist (FRCOphth) in 1993.

He developed a passion for corrective (refractive) eye surgery during his specialist training in Cornea and Refractive Surgery in USA. The fellowship was completed with distinction under Professor Marguerite McDonald in New Orleans in 1995. Prof McDonald is the first person in the world to perform Laser eye surgery and a world renowned authority in Corneal and Laser Eye surgery.

During the training with Prof Mcdonald he was among the first in the UK to perform LASIK laser eye surgery. He also wrote the Chapter on Laser Eye Surgery for the Reference Manual in Corneal surgery.

As part of his research project he helped to develop the First Radar tracking Excimer Laser for corrective eye surgery produced by Autonomous Technologies. This same technology is used today by NASA to dock the space shuttle with the International Space Station and is now used in eye lasers to follow the eye during laser treatment.

Appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Sunderland in April 1995 and then at University Hospital in Aintree, Liverpool from 1995 to 2001. At Aintree Hospitals he established the Cornea Clinic performing high volume cataract surgery and corneal transplants.

He was one of the first surgeons to perform Implantable Contact lens Surgery in UK as part of a research team developing this alternative new technology for correcting vision. He is now one of the most experienced surgeons in UK performing this surgery routinely. This Implantable Contact lens surgery is now considered the ‘Gold Standard’ for corrective eye surgery.

He was also one of the investigative group of surgeons in Europe looking to use Intacs corneal implants for correction of shortsight and astigmatism in 1997. Intacs is now established as a treatment for Keratoconus to correct astigmatism. He is now considered one of the most experienced surgeons in UK to perform this technique.

In 2001 he jointly developed one of the most advanced and successful accommodating Implants for correcting near vision, the Tetraflex’ Lens implant. This lens has been used by the majority of clinics in UK to correct near vision as part of Lens Exchange surgery or cataract surgery. As a consequence of this collaboration he was appointed Clinical Director for research and development of Lenstec Intraocular lenses Inc.

Mr Chitkara established and became one of the Directors of Boots Laser Eye clinics in 2001. As Director his role was to develop and monitor all protocols for laser treatments in all the clinics, Audit of quality control and training of all staff including doctors.

In 2004 Mr Chitkara founded Viewpoint Vision Services ltd, an independent Private Corrective eye surgery clinic with the aim of providing the most advanced and comprehensive corrective surgery clinic in the North. He was also appointed a member of the European Refractive surgery committee for Bausch and Lomb laser companies. He has continued to develop his interest in corrective surgery especially the treatment of presbyopia (corrective treatment for Reading glasses). This special interest includes the use of advanced technologies such as multifocal implants accommodating implants and corneal Inlays to correct for presbyopia.

In 2008 Mr Chitkara was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon In St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to modernise Cataract surgery in the Area. He established the first Rapid Access Cataract Service in St Helens as well as surgery under topical anaesthesia. This introduction led to virtual elimination of waiting lists for cataract surgery in St Helens for the first time in its history and to double the throughput of cataract surgery in the area.

Most recently he has introduced one of the most advanced technology for correcting near vision in the form of “Raindrop’ Implants. Viewpoint remains at the leading edge of technological developments in Corrective surgery and is the one of only two clinics in UK accredited to perform this procedure.

I have worn reading glasses for years so I decided I would go for laser surgery. Read several negative reviews on high street stores and it appeared it was a case of do the procedure and that's it, no aftercare as such and not always good results. But then I came across Viewpoint. The reviews were good so I made an appointment. Although I initially thought I would be having laser surgery, Dr Chitkara recommended I had a Raindrop Implant. Although the thought of someone cutting my eye and inserting a lens, albeit tiny, terrified me I thought I would take the plunge and go for it! I can honestly say it was totally painless. Drops are administered in the eye and you cannot feel a thing. The procedure took about ten minutes and post-op Dr Chitkara suggested I take paracetamol if there was any discomfort - there wasn't. I have been for a check up every four weeks and everything is fine. I can now read without glasses unless it is very small, faint print. It can take six months to see the full benefit. I would definitely recommend Dr Chitkara and the Raindrop Implant, just wish I had had it done years ago! Beverley W –  Cheshire July 2016
Not the most pleasant surgery experience I’ve ever been subjected to but wow! What a great result! 34 years with spectacles and now 20-20 vision and given up smoking to boot! Well worth it!

My consultation was absolutely hospitable and enjoyable. I wish I knew this man before because I went elsewhere and did not receive adequate help even though I paid fees, causing me so much stress. The operation was easy, painless and all through the process DR Chitkara and staff were very friendly and reassuring. This has changed my life completely now my sight is restored. Dr Chitkara even phoned me after surgery at home to make sure I was doing well. I can’t say enough how I appreciate his service and kindness.
